The University of Strathclyde

The Civil Engineering Department at The University of Strathclyde has world-renowned expertise in ground engineering, hydro-bio-geochemistry, hydrogeology and environmental diagnostics. The Department is a sponsor of the David Livingstone Centre for Sustainability (DLCS), which aims to promote cross-disciplinary programmes in teaching and research through context-specific blending of engineering, design, environmental, social and economic expertise.

Professor Kalin, Head of the Civil Engineering Department and Director of Research for the DLCS, is well recognised for its specialist expertise in the design, development and optimisation of permeable reactive barriers (PRBs). His involvement in this field spans over 20 years and incorporates the implementation of more than 9 full-scale PRB systems throughout the world for the treatment of a variety of contaminants.

The University is a key project partner with regard to the demonstration of the NITRABAR system. It is performing the site monitoring programme and performance analysis. Professor Kalin led the design of the NITRABAR system and aided in its installation and commissioning. The University will contribute to many NITRABAR dissemination activities, including representation at a variety of external events. It will contribute extensively to the NITRABAR recommendations report, a key deliverable in the project which is intended to enable others to replicate the system in their community/country
